What are Rivian stocks?
Rivian (or RIVN) stocks are company shares available for public trading via the Nasdaq Exchange.
The automotive company was originally founded as Mainstream Motors in 2009 before rebranding to Rivian Automotive, Inc. Its CEO, R.J. Scaringe, wanted to ensure the company did not look or act like a traditional motor supplier. Instead, Rivian professed a heavy focus on the environment and sustainability.
The automaker set out to produce luxurious, battery-powered vehicles that boasted autonomous driving capabilities. By 2019, the company employed over 1,000 employees and began to appear attractive to investors. As such, Amazon invested $700 million into the firm and placed an order of 100,000 electric vans to assist with its fleet operations.
Rivian generated an annual revenue of $2.98 billion for the year ending June 2023. It currently employs over 14,000 team members and has set up multiple locations across the US to support the delivery of the scale of its mission. Investor Amazon recently rolled out the first electric vans from Rivian in Europe, building a fleet in Munich, Berlin and Dusseldorf.
The stock price for Rivian debuted on public markets on 10 November 2021 at $78 per share. Around 153 million shares were sold at this initial IPO, which valued the company at $66.5 billion. This, in turn, raised the company nearly $12 billion in financing and RIVN shares began trading on the Nasdaq Exchange at an opening price of $106.75.
While Rivian boasted one of the most highly anticipated IPOs of 2021, its stock price has since declined. That's because the company reined in its production targets, totalled up some significant losses and recalled some of its vehicles.
As of October 2023, the stock price for RIVN has a 52-week range between $11.68 and $36.45.
What influences the Rivian stock price?
Several factors can influence the RIVN stock price today, which include:
- Competition: The fast-growing electric vehicle market features many companies trying to reach the top spot and, with the transition to EVs becoming increasingly popular among consumers, the competition is only expected to intensify. Tesla and Ford are two of Rivian's biggest rivals at present.
- Company news: Annual revenue reports, news of financial backers and changes in management can affect the share price of RIVN. Additionally, staff redundancies can cause a ripple in the market – in 2022, Rivian announced a 6% cut in its workforce to focus on production ramp, a move which reverberated onto prices.
- Market demand: As the world shifts its focus to more sustainable transportation, the demand for new EVs will undoubtedly see a higher demand, from which the eco-friendly automaker stands to benefit.
How can I trade Rivian stocks?
Start trading Rivian stock by opening a Tradu account and using financial derivatives. There are different methods to consider that allow you to profit without owning the underlying asset:
- CFDs: Contracts for difference (CFDs) involve the buying and selling of a contract that speculates on the direction in which the Rivian stock price will move. Your potential profits or losses will be determined by the difference in value between the opening and closing of the contract.
Access larger profit potentials by using leverage to increase your market exposure. By doing so, you'll be able to take larger positions with smaller deposits. However, it's important to note that using leverage can also have the opposite effect and increase your losses.
How to invest in Rivian stock
You can start investing via your Tradu account by simply adding the relevant funds. While you won't get the chance to make a profit across all market conditions when you purchase stock, you will get to own the underlying asset and can therefore potentially capitalise if the Rivian Automotive, Inc. share price were to rise.
This type of long-term investment can help you avoid the risk of high volatility, which is typically found in short-term trading. It's unlikely you'll make quick gains from investing, so make sure to consider the amount of time you'd like to commit when investing in Rivian stocks.
Advantages of trading Rivian stocks

Disadvantages of trading Rivian stocks
- Volatility: Many factors can create volatility within the market, affecting the share price of RIVN. Market fluctuations are often unpredictable and beyond your control, which can lead to high-risk trading.
- Leverage risk: While leverage can maximise your profits, it can also amplify your losses if your trade goes against your prediction. Take advantage of our risk-management tools to mitigate this as much as possible.
- Limited portfolio: It's advised that you trade across a range of markets, rather than just solely focusing on one company's stock. That's because you can be left vulnerable to those issues that affect the Rivian stock price if that's where all your investment is tied up.
