Key factors that affect the price of commodities

The price of commodities can be affected by political events, such as a major conflict, the weather, supply and demand, and the strength of the US dollar, because in most major markets around the world commodities are traded in the greenback. Read our guide on what drives commodities prices.

The different types of commodities

Commodities can typically be broken down into three broad categories:

  • Metals such as gold, silver and copper. Used for construction, jewellery and in countless other sectors.
  • Energies such as oil and natural gas. Used for transport, heating and more.
  • Agricultural commodities such as sugar, coffee and livestock. Used to supply the food industry.

Commodities are also sometimes defined as hard or soft. Hard commodities are those extracted from the earth like oil or gas, whereas soft commodities are usually grown or reared – for example, cocoa or cattle. Read our guide on the different types of commodities.

The benefits of commodity trading

Commodities are traded in huge volumes on a daily basis around the world. They are popular for several reasons:

  • They allow you to diversify from other markets such as forex or stocks. This can help lower your risk exposure, especially as commodities are not as strongly linked to the performance of some of these other asset classes.
  • Commodities tend to hold their value in times of economic uncertainty, unlike currencies or shares in individual holdings. You can use this greater stability to hedge against some of the other positions in your portfolio.
  • As well as trading commodities via derivative products that allow you to go long or short, you can also do so with leverage. So, you can open larger positions while committing only a relatively small percentage of the capital.

  • Range trading: Using the support and resistance levels of a commodity's price to trade within that range.
  • Breakout trading: Identifying the commodities that might defy those support and resistance levels.

Which type of analysis can assist with commodity trading?

Your analysis can typically be broken down into one of two categories, and many commodity traders find that a combination of both approaches can prove the most productive.

  • Fundamental analysis: Monitoring the likes of geopolitical, geological and technological developments to work out how they might impact commodity prices.
  • Technical analysis: Using charts and other tools to track movements and identify trends in commodity markets.
